Artist Statement

Exhibit opening, Feb. 19, 2020

Welcome to my artistic journey.

From my very first sculpture (Cathedral Flower Study, 1976), to work still in progress (Fiona) my passion for the process, the clay, the metal, and the stone, is on full display. The works in this collection have been selected from the 600 sculptures I have had the pleasure of creating for public purpose, and some 200 made for private collections. They fall into three broad categories.

Maquettes and Studies: These small works are created to allow the sculptor, architect, and client to discuss the project with specificity and agree on the design and intention expressed. They are the inspiration in its initial expression. On occasion, they are developed into finished works, in their own right.

Carver’s Models: These plaster models were made for the Washington National Cathedral to guide the carvers as they made the permanent iterations in limestone. They were sculpted with a shorthand vocabulary that allows for interpretation by the carver.

Full-sized Work: These pieces are displayed at their final scale and include the life-sized sculptures and the small bronzes. These fully-rendered pieces represent the culmination of that particular creative path. The finished sculptures in their settings can be viewed at JayHallCarpenter.com
